Imagine a deaf person mocking or making fun of another deaf person's use of his/her own voice. Well, it does happen. It's even worse when someone goes after a deaf father and his deaf son who wears a cochlear implant. And I have a video response for that based on a recent YouTube incident between Russell Errigo and ASL1817.
Here's my video seen below.
In the beginning I sign, and then I switch over to voice just to make a point, and then in the end I resume signing. This was brought up when ASL1817 used the opportunity to slam Russell Errigo about his speaking ability even though he didn't ask ASL1817's opinion for it. It was all centered around a topic about Russell's son, Dominic, and his ability to speak and listen with the use of his cochlear implant. A success if anything else. It's a double edged sword when you happen to be the deaf parents of a deaf child in a Deaf community even though the parents know ASL but gets their child implanted with cochlear implant at age 2. This is all about early intervention. Something that, apparently so, Russell and his wife knew about early on. You can find the video of Russell's son and the comments that came with it in YouTube.
Here's my response to ASL1817's attempt to slam Russell in more ways than one.

Man I'm MAD!!!!
1. The kid sounds fine. He sounds like a KID talking. He don't have a "deaf voice", he has a kid's voice.
2. WHO CARES!!! Even if he had the most profound deaf accents with his spoken language, SO?? He is learning and using it.
3. Who makes fun of a kid? That guy is an ass.
$. Oh, and his primary language models are both deaf. They must be working their butts off to make sure he gets both languages. BRAVO parents!
Yep. Dominic is fortunate to get the best of both worlds. Yet people of limited minds insist on going the route to insult Russell and his kid. Those people seriously need to lighten up and respect Russell, as a parent, his decision to implant Dominic.
You do realize that asl1817 could be some greasy high school student trolling youtube to annoy people right?
Beth, could be. Acted like one, too. You might be right. We'll see....or not.
Dominic sounds like a normal kid and in case asl1817 hadn't noticed, the boy was also code-switching between some sign and his voice.
Geez, the kid hasn't got even his 'adult' voice yet, and here he's getting bashed for a deaf accent. Kids are constantly trying out their voices (like how much louder can they get, heh) and still learning pronunciation of new words all the time. That goes not just for CI kids who speak but also for normal hearing kids.
And kudos to his parents for their commitment to their son's acquiring not just one, but two languages.
FYI Asl1817, I'm oral deaf and speak as well as Mike does, with no deaf accent, because like him I acquired spoken English at age 2, along with the use of hearing aids. I'm not saying this to brag or act superior, I'm saying this because I can tell the difference between normal speech and deaf speech and because there are some oral deaf who have normal speech and voice out there. How do you know he's got a deaf accent? Can you actually hear him? Because Dominic started spoken English very early, he will very likely not have a "deaf" accent as an adult. He will also have another language, sign language, as well.
You're backstabbing at Russell thru his kid.
Sheesh, don't that beat all.

He certainly sounded fine and normal like any other 6 year old kid.
1817 is just dumb, making these comments. He sure sounds normal to me.
ASL 1817 is Carl Schroeder's next guy- Jason Tozier and James Kittel.
I saw the user name ASL 1817 on their laptop two months ago.
Well, this isn't the place to name names. I'm not interested in speculations here. If the person has any guts, then he or she will show his/her face to the public. If not, then so be it.
What to know what is funny? We are seeing a live and breathing "Audist" in action. It is because someone can talk. Is that all to it?
Someone needs to practice what they preach.
jeez, the kid and his dad both speak fine, albeit with a deaf-sounding voice. I have a lot of trouble hearing accents and the difference between deaf and hearing voices, so probably not the best judge, but they were intelligible.
I think your vlog is right on. the discussions attached to the video were completely out of line, and exactly what you would expect from cowards who won't show their faces.
more choices is always better, in my opinion.
Exactly. More choices, not restricted or forced choices.
I have seen this kind of thing before in the Deaf community and have never understood it. I can hear speech pretty well and couldn't detect any obivou problems with Dominic's speech. What I liked best was when Dominic said he **loved** his cochlear implant. That says a lot!
Anyone who is deaf can develop a deaf accent, even those of us who grew up with perfect hearing. It's inevitable that people begin to speak the way they hear things, which is why if you live in the south long enough you will develop a little bit of a southern accent.
There is no shame in having deaf speech!! Putting others down is a sign of insecurity.
Kim, that's exactly what happened to me. My parents moved to Georgia from Washington state when I was 10 years old. I picked up a southern accent. My younger sister had it worse but my older brother didn't pick it up. As a young adult people keep asking me if I was from the south because of my southern accent.
Go figure.
