So, I wonder why in the comic book, the Hulk can talk, but in the TV series, the Hulk never talks, except to say GRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH! I’m thinking it is either:No, it's not. They cast him because of his size and build. He was a well known bodybuilder and was consider large for his size at the time at 6'5" and 275lbs. In fact he was one of the tallest professional bodybuilders at that time next to Arnold Schwarzenegger. I don't think it was that important to have a Hulk tv character to do these simple angry one liners when an occassional "Aaaarrrgghh!" would suffice. And it did. It was all about visual effects. Not about voice.
The writers found the Hulk would be played by Lou Ferrigno, and assumed that he can’t talk, even though Lou was raised orally and can talk.
OR
The writers wanted to emphasize the Hulk’s lack of intelligence, so they wrote it so the Hulk can’t or doesn’t talk in order to emphasize his stupidity. That is, muteness is equated with stupidity.
Either way, that’s a*dism, right?
There were five TV seasons, several TV movies and the first Incredible Hulk movie feature where the Hulk character never talked even though in comic books had him saying simple words like "Hulk smash! or "Hulk no like puny humans!" But that soon changed in the last Hulk movie a few years back by using Lou Ferrigno's voice to do the "Hulk smash!" voice over.
Hulk's verbal skills and intelligence have varied in the comics, but he's never been as mute as the TV version. So it's a little ironic that TV Hulk Lou Ferrigno will give voice to the Hulk in this film. Producer Gale Ann Hurd says Ferrigno was a last-minute addition to a panel on the movie at New York's Comic-Con. Director Leterrier invited him to "audition" onstage. "Lou did this amazing, 'Hulk smash!' " says Hurd. "And (director Louis Leterrier) said, 'Come in, we'll record you next week.' Everybody thought it was either a staged event or we wouldn't really do it. But the next week Lou came in in L.A. and his voice is the voice of the Hulk."Satisfied?
So, let's knock off this nonsense in the attempt to find anything to do with "avdism" or the use of the a-wordism and attach that to this Hulk thing. I'm sure Lou Ferrigno would have laughed at the whole silly notion. What's next? Preferring to talk instead of ASL would be labeled as avdist for a deaf person, too? Oh, please! Such moronic thinking.

I see to remember King Kong was short on verbals too lol Damned audist.... It's true what they say, if there was no discrimination someone would still invent it....
GAHHHH!!
HULK NO LIKE PUNY YELLOW-BELLIED HUMANS! HULK BASH!
GAARRRRHHHHHHH---HHHAAAAARRRGHHHHHHH!!
I'm sorry your intelligence and vision are too limited to see the big picture and contemplate alternate possibilities.
One other thing... notice they have Lou's VOICE only for the new movie, to play the Hulk. Why is that? Are they equating Deaf voice with brutish, "Hulk-like" voice?
DonG, the acting role was all visual stuff. They needed an actor who was big. Lou fit the bill. I simply dismiss your "theory" as not worthy to even consider. If you want to get into the arena of intelligence perhaps I can direct you and the readers to here and let them decide. OK?
Because of Lou's success as the Hulk he actually hired people to help him with his voice and diction.
"But Ferrigno’s acting experience includes far more than just his role as the Hulk. He began what would be many years of speech therapy to correct his diction and vastly improve his lip-reading skills, leading to roles in several stage productions and more than 30 TV and film roles. After The Incredible Hulk ended, Ferrigno went onto other roles that allowed him to put his acting chops and muscles to work. These include his role as Hercules in Hercules and Sinbad in Sinbad of the Seven Seas. Recently, he took on a recurring role on The King of Queens playing himself as a neighbor to the show's main characters."
So, it was probably wise for the director to not let the tv Hulk go around and scream "Hulk smash!" until Lou's own diction actually improved. Hence, the voice behind the latest Hulk movie was a success!
Now, your second "theory" is getting even more lame. Watching the movie and hear Hulk scream "Hulk smash" you wouldn't care or know who did the voice over. Only that it was an impressive one. I remember hearing that as I look back. I pointed the fact behind the movie Hulk story and now you're now getting into this conspiracy thing all over again.
Hey, we can play this "intelligence" game any time you want. The only problem is you actually brought it up.
Know what I am thinking.....The deaf community *should* be grateful to have Lou F. to be in the character, Hulk. He is hard of hearing. Thanks to the audition and director.
What about the late 1800/1900's black and white film with no sounds? The actors and actresses were hearing. There were *no* hard of hearing nor deaf actors and actress to be in the film during that year.
Dr. Don G. has to re-think about the year of 1800/1900's with no sounds. IMO, it's analogy between Lou F.'s only-voice/"body language" and "no sounds" when the actors/actress not to use their voices in the black and white film.
Oh man!!! This Dongkey is so desperate now. He probably ran out of examples on aufism and started watching too much television. Poor guy. Remember this, he's the same guy that did not know what monopoly money was.
RLM, get a clue. You're not welcomed here.
The focus on axdism is going to be the downfall of the deaf community. It's their chip on their shoulder that is preventing them from getting anywhere...it's easy to do that than it is to make something of oneself in this world.
I'm trying so hard not to laugh, but I have to agree with theHolism about the monopoly money..
What is Dr. DonG's Blog link please
Ha, I can't believe Dr. Dong said that.
I wonder his so called "yellow t-shirts" gang would rally front of Marvel comic headquarter in NYC next?
Schoolchildren on the street of NYC don't understand what's going on with yellow t-shirt gang on step of the headquarter. Schoolchildren will think Dr. Dong as Crackajack ( Hulk's foe)

Me being one that defends all aspects of the deaf and hard of hearing people, regardless of their communication modes. I am going to go ahead and open a can of worms here but I'm gonna use a word here that he and many others did not like.....reverse audism.
He was saying that hulk was stupid for not talking right, yet we have many deaf people that cannot talk right and yet they still try to talk when it comes to hearing people. If that isn't reverse audism then what is it?
We even have deaf people that grunt and I am not mocking those people in any way whatsoever, just stating facts, as its even a part of the deaf culture. If he's calling Hulk stupid for grunting, then exactly what is he calling these deaf people that grunt too?
This makes me feel as if he made an offensive comment ya know and its the only reason I am calling on him on this matter. He has disrespected those deaf people that grunt and I actually know of deaf people that are so proud of their grunting abilities and some of them are so proud of it that they will actually grunt loud enough to make a deaf person actually "hear" him cuz the tone of the voice actually makes the eardrums rattle.
I know this as I am profoundly deaf and I've had college classmates that grunted so loud that my eardrums would actually feel it when my body wouldn't feel it. Grunting is a part of deaf culture and Don should be ashamed of calling people that grunt "stupid", as that is what he is calling these deaf people that grunt, and he should make an apology for that, considering that he is an educator.
In my opinion, that comment was downright offensive!
I was gonna comment on his blog but only saw he had one comment there so I guess I thought I'd get my point across here in this blog better. I also saw the only comment that was on his blog that also said something about Lou Ferrigno being the actual voice behind the Hulk in the new movie, which I found to be an interesting tidbit.
Anonymous,
DonG's blog link is already linked in my blog near the beginning.
Valhallian,
I never gave much thought to that. Good point! Even though I never equated grunting as a sign of stupidity among deaf people. Just that it's a part of them. Accept that reality.
Val --
You are totally misinterpreting what I said. The Hulk IS stupid. The gamma rays made him brawn, but stripped Bruce/David of his intelligence. That is why he talks in a holophrasic manner (a la a 2-year-old).
I NEVER said anything about Deaf people grunting. I was talking about Hearing people's perceptions of "Deaf voice".
I am not going to comment or clarify further, since I know this crowd (of cronies?) just LOVES to jump on me and misinterpret EVERYTHING I say. I'm ashamed of YOU for putting words into my hands that I did not say or intend. I thought YOU were better than that!
By the way "anonymous" on the link question, I *ALWAYS* link to sources on what I'm discussing about in my blogs. ALWAYS. Just talking about another blogger's blog and not give readers the link(s) so they can go over and see for themselves wouldn't be called "good blogging" but crappy blogging. Not crediting a blogger for a letter made available to the public and pretend to be his/her own on his/her blog is sleezy and dishonest. Don't be a ding dong.
I read DonG's Blog and the article about Lou Ferrigno. Its has nothing to do with audism. He became an actor cuz of his bodybuild.
"Ferrigno’s decision to become a bodybuilder led to his career as an actor."
and also
"His hearing loss also made him ideal for the part. “It’s natural for me to show emotions without speaking,” Ferrigno says. So his ability to act out emotions non-verbally benefited him in the role."
Have a good day !
