Organizational Cyberbullying Action

What is that? "Organizational Cyberbullying Action" or OCA where groups of people band together in the effort to cyberbully people into silence. Sometimes using an organization as a front but behind the scene the bullying by leaders or members of that organization occurs. A term that Amy came up while commenting in my blog regarding use of a DBC website to harass a blogger. Although the definition of OCA was my own, not Amy's. Something that I thought was worth looking into for now.

Over the last few years or so, especially right after DPN2 protest in 2006, the use of new and colorful words were used and abused in the effort to suppress others into submission by getting bloggers and vloggers to shut up with their comments and opinions contrary to other Deaf people's views and opinions by using words against them. Words like:

Avdism. This is probably the number one word used to try and cajole and suppress other bloggers or vloggers' opinions by accusing them of practicing "avdism." This word was especially used against Tayler in the effort to control him on how Deafread and DVTV are to be operated.

Colonized/Colonialized. As in the case here seen in this screenshot where one Deaf person used a visible and well known organization's website, Deaf Bilingual Coalition, to try and bully me into submission (see story here) and create an appearance he had the backing of the DBC behind him. Incidentally, neither the Deaf person in question and especially the DBC never once made any attempt to make a formal and public apology to me. The word "colonialized" is a commonly used word against other deaf and hard of hearing people, and sometimes Deaf people. The word was conceptually derived from Paddy Ladd's book as a source of inspiration for Deaf people to use and abuse.

All these efforts at suppression seems to reek of the age old social problem of "not Deaf enough" lobbed at other Deaf people, ironically so. And if you're a Deaf person who doesn't agree with "avdism" then you are deemed as a "traitor" to the Deaf community. If your views do not jive with some Deaf people populist views then they see you as an adversary, a person who doesn't fit the mold as what a Deaf person is supposed to behave, act, and think when others see it as extremism going too far. There's common sense and then there's extremism.

Contrasting DBC with HLAA and ALDA -- organization blog posts are strictly limited to information about the org's activities. Chat lists are monitored for appropriate content. Some may call this 'censorship' but what happens on the webpages of a professional org is up for scrutiny when they have non-profit status.

Recently happened in an ALDA chat list that an ALDA member was convicted of a crime. Any discussion of that has been prohibited. As a member of the chat list, I was frustrated as I knew this person and wanted more information. Still-- I respect ALDA's position of not wanting to promote gossip and misinformation about any individual on their list. My respect for them as 'professionals' went way up.

No organization can control what people post on their private blogs, but leaders should not post gossipy defamatory comments. It's simply beneath a professional to do so.

Exactly! Exactly! It's the pure professionalism as an organization and the expectations for leaders in those organizations to be professional in what they do. It's about image. What hurts an organization is for a leader or leaders to go around and do these hit jobs on other people. Not cool. Not professional.

"You have been assimilated. Resistance is futile" often comes to mind when it comes to certain types of cyber-bullying ;)

I agree! When I learned about the DBC chatroom via AIM (through the deafread) several years ago, I was surprised to see John Egbert, the founder of DBC did neither do anything nor reprimanded at his members. He lets his members to make some nasty things on Cochlear Implants, Oralism, Oral programs and many more.

I saw AFA/DBC's videos through the youtube, they protested at AG Bell in Wisconsin and Washington, DC, there were several leaders who did appear. I was like, What kind of those leaders were in? Role Models? None!

DBC/AFA have never realized that the leaders have hurt their organization. What about the fundraising or donations? They will have a long haul to reach some millions of dollars. That'll never happen.

I researched the California Association for the Deaf's (CAD) website and found a link:

http://cad1906.org/sites/default/files/AB2072_lowres-1.pdf

go to page 8/9.....

I find that CAD is not accepted anything related to hearing loss. So, What kind of organization is that? CAD would have rejected any people who work for any CI corporations/industries or Oral programs. A way of bad example! Your'e right, Kim.

Mike, I very well remember a lot of criticism on DeafRead made by Deaf extremists about your speaking with voice instead of using ASL at the DeafRead Conferene at Gallaudet in fall 2006/07. Rachel Chaikof was also confronted about her CI and speech skills. I can't believe the audacity of their stripping of Deaf people's human rights. They've no right to control Deaf people's lives. God give the free will of choice to human beings.

anony 5:09 PM. Yes, that's exactly right. Although don't call deaf or hh people "Deaf" unless you know for a fact they speak for themselves as a "Deaf" person. Rachel consider herself as a deaf person, not Deaf.

I found this blog looking for advice on cyberbullying as my dyslexic son is just starting to use the internet on his own. I found the information here interesting as I had thought about chat rooms and forums as someone where this type of bullying can happen.

I found this UK site with some good tips and Cyberbulling Advice

Does anyone know if there is anything in the US like this?
