Poll: Is this Astronaut signing in SEE, PSE or ASL?

I suppose you remembered last year when a female astronaut became the first astronaut in space to sign back to Earth in a signed video message to the people of Earth? Review this video and tell me what you think is her mode of communication is like.  Watch the video of her signing and then take a poll at the bottom on what you think her mode of communication is when it comes to signing.

If you're not sure on which mode of communication she may be using then click on one of the links below.

What is SEE?

What is PSE?

What is ASL?

What is SE, SimCom, and Total Communication?

That was a neat thing to witness! Sign language in the outer space!

The astronaunt is singing in Signed English and fingerspelling. She utilises neither SEE nor ASL/PSE.

If she uses the voice, then she is SimComming.

Why do I say that she is not signing in SEE? Simply because she does not use an ending -s for plural nouns. For example, she signs "students" without using an ending -s.

Post Scriptum:

I did not vote because there is no "Signed English" on your poll list.

I chose "SE" as that was assumed to be signed English. This would be a more valid test if all the choices were defined, not just the top three choices.

I have just voted for SE.

Thank you, Diane, for mentioning
SE.

I voted SE (Signed English) even before reading the comments.

Based on the results thus far, it looks like those who voted for PSE don't *really* understands what PSE is. Brainwashed from society or what?

Good poll, Mike!

Renee',

If you are going to go out on a limb and call people "brainwashed" because they picked PSE you need to provide a thorough analysis on why that astronaut signed in SE and not PSE.

The fact of the matter is that she signed in English word order interspersed with bits of ASL.

Mike,

I'm a PSE user myself. Or maybe more accurately (politically correct?), a PSE/ASL user.

The astronaut signed word for word, hence SE but not SEE which includes "s" "ing, etc. I would hardly call her signing method as PSE.

Please don't get me wrong, Mike, but I support the sign language diversity, including speaking.

I guess the reason I mentioned "brainwashed" is the first word that came to mind when viewing the astronaut was more of SE. Then when I saw the poll results and found that most voters chose PSE, I got really puzzled. Like "Huh? What?" So I then thought that maybe those voters were "brainwashed" into thinking that PSE means SE... as if PSE is totally different from ASL, not the "norm," per sé. What I meant by "norm" is I think the majority of signers use PSE, (not "pure" ASL as many would like to think).

Of course I'm *not* a linguist at all but I've been deaf all of my 49 years' life and went to the school for the deaf the whole life.

The astronaut had a good heart! She took her time to learn sign language because she wanted to. It was cool watching her have fun making that video.
