One commenter starts first:
The most disturbing of all signposts shown in the video is “Hearing & Speech Center : __Patient Parking Only__” (emphasis mine). The word “Patient” insults all deaf students’ intelligence! So unbelievable. Why do students not protest?
And then others follow and chime in.
A “patient” is a person who is sick. Being Deaf or hard-of-hearing is not an illness or medical disaster. And more....
Hearing and Speech Center for Patient Parking Only? OMFG! The gloves are coming off! Calling Deaf people “patients” is deemed offensive because there is nothing wrong with us. Gally is for students, not patients. WTF is matter with that Hearing and Speech Center people to decide on that?!?
We need to do something about that. JJ, they’re not grasping the straws. I don’t know what has gotten into you lately but yet I’ve noticed you’re starting to divide the Deaf just like others. Divide needs to STOP! I mean it. I’m sick of that.
Let’s NOT talk about the students and video, JUST DROP THAT! We need to focus on that signs and the words “Hearing Speech and Center” and “Patient”. We need to hear from Gally President, Board of Trustee and staff….or anybody who came up with that! Let’s focus on that.
Let's look at the definition of "patient" in the noun form and not as an adjective:
1a : an individual awaiting or under medical care and treatment b : the recipient of any of various personal services. There are many ways to be a patient. You can be a patient receiving psychological counseling. You can be a patient on getting your teeth cleaned at a dentist. You can be a patient receiving surgical care. You can be a patient in getting your annual flu shot. You can be a patient in getting your hearing test done at an audiology clinic. You can be a patient in getting your hearing aid fitted or getting a new ear mold set up at the audiology clinic. You can be a patient receiving speech therapy to help improve diction. You can be a patient at a counselor office getting counseling advice. To be a patient does not necessarily mean in terms of being sick or unhealthy or that one is suffering. It all depends on the situation. It all depends on perspective. If all else fails, call them "clients" instead. As for "Hearing and Speech Center" go here for my opinion on that part.
2: one that is acted upon.
Addendum: Full meltdown mode in process. Proceed at your own risk.
Seriously, now.

These grumpy deafies are being comical here. If they are not careful they'll become the laughing stock of the century, if not already.
Thank God we have the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

To say this sign "Insults all deaf students' intelligence" only shows this persons shortcomings in the intelligence department.
I, for one, have Meniere's Disease. I see a Doctor who treats my Disease, and who calls me a Patient.
Deafness is not a culture - else people would have a choice whether or not to participate. Deafness is not a race, else two deaf parents would always produce deaf children, and deaf children would never be born to two hearing parents.
And finally - despite what people like this may lead folks to believe, being deaf does not necessarily mean you're dumb.
I am rather perplexed and incomprehended of why this particular issue about being a patient for speech and hearing center was created a big deal. For instance, there are other places that does say patient parking at a speech and hearing clinic. What is the difference if it is being at Gally or other places?
If it only refers to Gally and not other places, then I would considered as biased and prejudice without any merits. Am I understanding correctly that Speech and Hearing Center does not only provide services for the Deaf? Does it provide services for people, who are Hard of Hearing, have certain hearing loss (other than HOH), conductive hearing loss, deaf, and Deaf? How many of those people with hearing loss, who wears hearing aids, cochlear implants, baha, and other assistive devices attend at Gally? Would those people appreciate having services available at Gally instead of going other places? Would they be considered as patients, who would receive those services? Acknowledging the word, "patients" and "clients" can be interchangeable. Therefore, it can be acceptable to say Patient Parking Lot since they would provide services for the general public if it is not only directly for Gally Students. Again, I am perplexed about why bring this issue up.

I cannot read due to the small fonts. your arctile is useless!
wtf? your photo is a hoax. this sign is not in gallaudet campus. you must be so obsessed about oralism in campus.
If you have to see or be attended to by a doctor then what other title is there ? 'Client' ? 'Stakeholder" ? "'Service user" ? "Customers" ? Just 4 they use in the UK of 13 alternatives, guess who wanted those alternatives ? Rigggggght !
anony @ 12:15AM,
Please learn to take advantage of using zoom if you cannot read the small fonts. Hit two keys, hold down the CTRL key and hit + to zoom in. Hold down the CTRL key and hit - to zoom out.
Anony 12:17 AM, no hoax. Nothing about oralism here but about people have an apoplectic fit over the word "patient."
Happy holidays!
MM, certainly. I offered an alternative at the end of my blog piece. Convince Gallaudet to use the word "client" (or "clientele") since after all in order to be a client means you must get some service done for you.
When they talk about deaf people, the 'Deaf' have too narrow a focus to be inclusive of anything. Gallaudet is a world of its own creation, which I am sure wasn't the original idea of it. There was me thinking it was an educational establishment to widen deaf people's perceptions of the world outside their own and improve access.
I would also hope that Gallaudet, like other campuses, has a medical clinic where sick students may go for treatment? Or are Deaf students immune to colds, food poisoning, pregnancy, and muscle strain?
Kim..
Gallaudet has a Student Health center, it's called Peter J. Fine Health Center. It wasn't great, not when I was there. Good for minor stuffs.
That is good to know Candy. That means Deaf people at Gallaudet can be patients while they are there on campus. And sometimes when they get new earmolds made, or new contact lenses or a mouth guard for football, they would be patients then too.
Not 'patients' lol.
