My lost video...resurfaced!

This is an old video (with subtitle) response to Deaf Pundit's, aka Jeannette Johnson, comment that I've long forgotten. Never bothered to put my video up on YouTube the day after she mentioned about a blog I did and "Candy's" back in June 2011 with her comments in one of Deaf Jeff's blog piece. Needless to say, it was something that made me shake my head with incredulity and a raised eyebrow. So, once again, if you're curious go ahead and see my video.

One part of your video indicated you are fluent in signing. Why didn't you sign instead of speaking? That might bring home the points you are trying to emphasize.

Because I wanted to talk. No big mystery there. It's all in the caption on the points I made. Just be thankful that I provided captioning. When I sign, I'll sign (and provide captioning). When I talk, I'll provide captioning.

Ok?

Well, I'm just confused. Your targeted audience are Deaf people because the topic is Deaf-related stuff, correct? So, one would think that if the topic is important, the method you bring your point across is as equally important. By you refusing to sign shows arrogance, egotistic, conceited and narcissistic behavior on your part.

I was informed of your blog because of your intensive research and I have been impressed with it, no question about it. However, I have to admit your attitude with regards to talking over signing, when the targeted audience are Deaf people, is a total turn-off. Add the comment "just be thankful that I provided captioning". Whooo. Yeah, thanks for the captions, however, it's not the point. Bottom line: your attitude shows cocky, and that it would be hard to have a genuine discussion with you. No thanks. Your loss.

Anony@ 10:54 AM,
As I have said in the video, I have a preference. It was a spur of the moment thing and expressed my opinion in my own format with captions. Btw, I have included captions even in my signed videos in YouTube as well. My targeted audience is for anybody who can access my video whether they are Deaf, deaf, hh or hearing or if they know sign language or not. Whenever I sign or talk I make sure my video is captioned. Either you can accept that or you do not. Apparently you do not.

In fact, I did a speaking presentation using my voice only at Gallaudet's first vlog/blog Conference (C2I Conference) in 2007 in front of a mostly Deaf audience sitting in front of me and front of a live internet audience at Ely Center to discuss in my panel on "The Futuristic Classrooms." There were 3 panels altogeter that discussed their own topic of discussion "Whither Gallaudet?", "Future Visions of Deaf Identity," and "The Futuristic Classroom." And a keynote panel on "Vlogging/Blogging and the Future of the Deaf Community." They provided ASL interpreters and had real time captioners to provide live internet captioning. So, no message was lost on my account. My presentation was well received.

Not my loss at all. I don't expect throngs of people. Just those that accept me for who I am...and not about what I must be. I have my own identity and I'm comfortable with it. You are not. Not my loss at all.

And lastly, why insist on anonymity?

Hmmm....

Hi Mike..

Discovered this post just now.

I agree, it's funny. It's sad too.

It would seem that she had her own rule of what a deaf person should or shouldn't be saying, as did a few others. Even funnier when I have 'native' experience in deaf culture, one that she lacked. But, that's all I'll say at this point. No need to wake up a sleeping dog.

I think it all has to do with certain people objecting to anything brought up about deaf people or deaf culture that doesn't shine a nice light on them. Never mind the truth, lies and lies are better - especially if it shines nice and bright.

And, if it didn't have anything to do with facts/truths, opinions are frown upon, if it didn't mesh with theirs.

Stay safe out there where the fires burn in your part of the world.
