The lawyer for Angela McCaskill says she is "not anti-gay." Attorney J. Wyndal Gordon says McCaskill will speak in greater detail about her actions at a news conference Tuesday in Annapolis, Md.The key thing that's important to see is that even gay marriage supporters have criticized Gallaudet University for punishing McCaskill by placing her on administrative leave. There are actually people out there who recognize the importance of exercising one's First Amendment. And the right from fear for reprisals for exercising that First Amendment.
Gallaudet is the nation's leading university for the deaf and hard of hearing. McCaskill, who lives in Maryland, is the chief diversity officer at the school. She was placed on leave this week. Gordon says he is exploring legal options to get her reinstated.
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley and other gay marriage supporters have criticized the move, saying McCaskill should not be punished for exercising her First Amendment rights.

McCaskill retains a lawyer
It was a matter of time until Dr. Angela McCaskill retained a lawyer in the eventuality if she does gets fired as Chief Diversity Officer at Gallaudet University for signing a petition to put a referendum on a ballot regarding same sex marriage in Maryland. Her lawyer will explore legal options to get her re-instated.

At a University there are a lot of jobs which require you to be impartial (academic studies with test subjects), and sign a waiver saying you have no conflict of interest if $$ is involved at any point. But the higher your position at a (in any way) publicly funded school at ALL times this applies, no bias, nothing political is allowed, protesting, writing an op-ed article, joining Occupy, etc. This would be like Bill Gates admitting he uses an iphone or even being seen and photographed with one. Anything public he does could have a huge effect on Microsoft stock prices. I guarantee her employment contract says something like this because I visit a lot of science and skeptical forums and I run across university instructors who have to remain completely anonymous for the same reasons. No appearance of bias is allowed and I am awaiting Gallaudet to file their own lawsuit against her for loosing some credibility. Sorry this is so long but I see this point missing in other discussions.
I don't think she should be fired but I do think she should be reassigned. She also should be personally ashamed at her moral failure in this situation.
She was the Chief Diversity Officer- not the Head Accountant or the Head Librarian.
It was her JOB to ensure an inclusive and diverse community. By signing that petition she failed at her job.
She might be a wonderful and compassionate human being who made a mistake and ABSOLUTELY should be given a second chance.
Just as we must acknowledge that her fuck-up was spectacular and worthy of derision.
Moral failure? Seriously? There is no "moral failure" for exercising one's constitutional and civil rights. There is no "moral failure" for exercising her First Amendment right. The real moral failure is the person who insisted on doing a witch hunt in the effort to get McCaskill fired simply because the person disagreed with her right to petition and vote.
As far as everybody was concerned before the witch hunt, McCaskill has been doing her job to ensure an inclusive and diverse community.
Exactly, before the witch hunt, McCaskill was doing an exceptional job and no one complaint. At issue here is the right of McCaskill to sign petition outside of her duty hours. Some folks say her job is 24/7. SMH
Her job description will have to state that her position is 24/7 and that she is expected to be on call 24/7, which I doubt is the case. Her job description would have to specifically state that she must support marriage equality, which by the way would be a violation of several laws already on the books.
McCaskill obviously has been able to not allow her personal view interfere with her job, it's very common for many of us to have a job with views we don't always agree with. We know better not to let our personal views interfere with the duties demanded of us on the job. I believe that is what is happening with McCaskill, otherwise we'd have already heard by now that she has allowed her personal views to muddle up her duties as a COD.
People should leave their personal views at home, before they go to their jobs and vice versa.
Who is that deaf female professor at Gallaudet who searched for McCaskill's name on the petition? Why did she spend so much time doing this? Doesn't she have better things to do? Did she have grudges with McCaskil?
Lastly, you have a pro marriage equality campaign manager in MD who now wants Gallaudet to reinstate McCaskill. And, a anti-marriage equality group in MD who wants McCaskill reinstated too. This is looking bad for Gallaudet by every minute.
Who would have thought the real erosion of free speech would emanate from the land of the free ? Diversity, another word that starts with a 'D' and discriminates too.
I have never liked signing any petitions! I rather to protect my identity.
Well, Candy, as for a female professor who dug up on Angela MsCaskill's name in the petition.....perhaps, she has a grudge on her due what...Jealousy?
There's a big IF. If a female professor who become a whistle blower to attack Angela's background whether it's a personal or as a co-worker, what would happen to a female professor? Hiding? She has a right not to disclose her identity. You betcha! Unfortunately, she is not Gallaudet's Heroine. There's no win-win situation.
Gallaudet ought to clean up their action and have Angela to reinstate her reputation, however, sadly, she already became the permanent victim. It's good to know that she hired a lawyer to defend herself and her will-being.
I find it really ridiculous!
