Money donated to "Deafhood? No thanks" Facebook group

In a surprise move that came out of the blue a somewhat mysterious donor is in the process of donating $656 to a newly established Facebook group called "Deafhood? No thanks." It was explained that the money to be donated is contingent on seeing membership hit 400 members, which could happen sometime today. This somewhat large sum of money came as an unexpected surprise never thinking this sort of thing would ever happen. Of course, by the time you're done reading this you might be kicking yourself.

I'm a little worried we are doing Deafhood a favour, by highlighting it. There is no such thing as bad publicity. If we are going to try to kill the concept by ridicule it may fail. It plays into the paranoia many devotees of DH appear to suffer from. We should try taking the book to task, explain where it falls into farce and fantasy, and non-fact..

Doesn't matter, we are taking them to task for being hypocrites and dishonest.

Thank you for bringing more attention to Deafhood. Deafhood discussions at FB has over 800 members. That says a lot.

Discussion means exactly that, a discourse. It does not indicate whether people support or disagree with the theory. In this 'no thanks' facebook group 400 plus people actually took a stand and said no thanks to deafhood. Now compare that with deafhood foundation group in facebook. Those are the people who actually decided to side with deafhood theory. Only 120 people there. Go figure.

Right, Barry.

And, to, "anonymous," in the "Deafhood Discussion" FB it describes what the FB group is about:

The purpose of this group is to discuss with open minds and positive goals of our future as Deaf world citizens.

It does not matter what your educational background or your mode of communication ; if you are Deaf, then you have Deafhood! Welcome!

"...future as Deaf world citizens."

No thanks. I see myself as a person with a hearing loss, not as a "Deaf." You see, here's your problem. Your crutch and dependence are on those who know and mostly depend sign language (ASL). Which is why most of you people prefer a more closed society of Deaf people to work with, rather than simply for those who with hearing loss. You set yourselves apart by attaching yourselves to the past (e.g. Milan conference, etc) rather than to look to the future with a clean slate. Simply this, you want to carry these baggages of yours. At "Deafhood? No thanks," we don't want those baggages at all. We believe it's simply better to respect everybody rather than to label them and make them suspect.

I dare you put out a message to invite AGBell supporters who are deaf or hard of hearing and set up a conference specifically for them. I dare you to put out a message to invite HLAA supporters. I dare you to put out a message to invite supporters of oral/aural, AVT, and cued speech supporters/users and set up a conference for them. I dare you to put up conferences for people with mild or even moderate hearing loss and tell them about "deafhood" in the effort to lure them into YOUR world, rather than a more open society type of understanding.

I DARE YOU! And without having all those baggage, too.

Now, back to our regular programming.

Here's a comment said in that "Deafhood Discussion":

Only Deaf beings can fully comprehend what it means and take this journey.

Only Deaf people can understand? That's what I call as "arrogant" and disrespectful to the rest of the community of people with hearing loss. It also signifies to be a more Closed typed of society than an open one with that kind of attitude and outlook.

I've no problem if Deaf people want to do this. But it is not designed to be an open society. That's the problem. You say you welcome all, but your actions and words say otherwise.

Another one from "Deafhood Discussion."

"Deafhood Discussions is disheartened that some Deaf people spread misleading information about Deafhood. Deafhood accepts all kinds of Deaf people including Deaf, deaf, late-deafened, hard of hearing, Deaf people with cochlear implants, people from mainstream schools or residence schools and allies such as hearing people/CODAS. Deafhood is... a concept of Deaf people as whole beings, not as partial beings such as Broken-Ear Focused Beings."

Yet, even from so-called leaders jump in glee in seeing that choices are reduced for parents of deaf/hh children such as wanting to see AGBell organization gone. Getting rid of AVT, cued speech, or even cochlear implant for children. You say that "Deafhood accepts all kinds" but your continuing actions and words, even from leaders themselves, say an altogether a different story and picture.

I think it's sad someone is donating such a large sum of money to a group that is about doing nothing instead of to a group that is about doing SOMETHING.

Don, read a little bit more. Click on some links first.

Mike, it proves two points. One, since $656 is considered to be 'large sum of money' to Don G it pretty much disclosed his poverty level. Two, holding a doctorate degree isn't going to make you rich and successful. Thank you Don G for making a classic example of yourself.

It also shows that they are struggling financially.
