Where were you when 9/11 happened? I remember exactly where I was that day when I received the news that one of the towers collapsed did I realize the enormity of this tragic event unfolding. About two hours earlier as I drove my way to a fishery dam that I was supervising which was going to be breached and deconstructed in order to restore channel flow, in my vehicle I briefly heard on my radio that a plane flew into one of the New York city's building. I immediately had the impression that it was a small commuter airplane that erroneously and tragically flew into a building just like the one time in 1945 a plane flew into the Empire State Building. Two hours later while I was supervising the deconstruction a fellow worker came down and told me the bad news. After that I dreaded going home and see it all on television after I listened to the radio during my two hour drive back home listening to the heart-breaking story.
Most Americans problably remember exactly where they were when the first heard or saw the tragic event. As a deaf or hard of hearing person, tell us where you were on that tragic day exactly 9 years ago on 9/11. Do you remember it vividly?

i am not deaf..but my son is. he was just over 1 year old. he was 1 month away from being implanted. I remember watching an itty bitty TV in my kitchen with him sleeping on my chest. I then went to our deaf baby class..where none of the deaf people had known what went on. The internet was here back in 2001 but not near as much as today. And the class was at ??10 am maybe..maybe 11. our teacher (hearing) had heard of it.. and I saw her sign to the class what had happened. That was a bit of a defining moment for me.. that we were making the right decision to implant. ohhhh..i feel a blog coming on. I hadn't thought of that memory for quite some time. (He's 10 now.)
Oh, yes. I was at work that morning. I had a couple web browser open to news sites and I was checking the web before getting on with work. At first I'd thought it was just a small plane, and then I started seeing videos of the tower. And then we heard about the hit on Pentagon.
Of course, being in DC metro area this was Ground Zero and I still had to take the metro to get home.
Still makes me angry to think of this and I don't think my anger will ever go away.
Looks like we both picked this topic! GMTA?

Forgive me for not re-telling my story.
Hubby and I were up early that AM, he was preparing to deliver a project to LAX to be air-shipped. He got a call from our client to forget it, because LAX was shut down for national security reasons. Hubby said, huh? what do you mean? The client said to turn on your TV and you'll know. That's when we saw the first plane hitting the first tower on the TV set, and I said casually, oh, no, it's a movie. Hubby said very grimly, no, it's not. And just as he said that, we saw the second plane hit the second tower in almost real time, the very first video of that one.
We both sat there stunned, it was too surreal, the timing of what we both said as we watched.

I was nursing my 1-year-old daughter, watching Today news... then the breaking news showing the video... I was glued to TV from there on...stunned, shocked, dismayed, etc.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was getting ready to go to a class, and I for some reason decided to turn on the television to look at the news. During that time, I usually never watched TV in the morning. I don't know why I decided to do so.
When I saw that a plane flew into one of the twin towers, I at first thought, like Mike, that a commuter plane accidently flew into one of the buildings. Then the second plane came. I stopped eating my cereal and sat there absolutely still. Shocked and horrified. I sat there for a good hour until it sunk in what really just took place.

Making the connection between late reception of news and the decision to implant a baby with the CI was kind of illogical.
I knew immediately from a newsflash on my computer and the TV. My sons knew immediately at school when Deaf teachers came to the classrooms and notified the Hearing teachers just as the news came over the PA system.
As far as I know, CIs don't come with piped in news. We have so many ways to obtain news that we almost have a redundancy.
to anonymous .. you are right it was not logical.. it was all about the heart. we had already done the research and knew from a technical point it was what we should do.. and were then working on how our feelings were at that point

i did end up blogging on it as well
I was driving my car with my hearing partner in England when he told me the 9/11 news from the radio. I was horrified and watched it all on t.v when I got home, I was very saddened for the loss of all those lives. Last Nov I went to New York and visited Ground Zero, it was very moving and I can't begin to imagine how the New yorkers must have felt. My prayers are with you on this day.
I remember standing in my living room at a really remote ranch, tuning in whatever our satellite television was able to bring in. I stood in awe of this historic incident but never felt I was in danger. The next nearest resident or ranch was approximately 11 miles away. Being in middle of no where I felt very safe knowing that the rest of the nation was not at ease. It was an awkward feeling and I could never forget it.
Instead of working I sat on the couch for most of the day trying to make some sense out of it. Most of it still don't make sense today when I think about it.
I was at work, all of sudden everyone was crowding at several TV's, little ones that some co-workers had on their desk. "A small plane hit WTC, they think." Said one. All of a sudden the second plane hit, everyone was confused. We all start talking about people who are part of our division that has an office in one of the several towers at WTC. Are they ok? We're notified to go home after both towers fell. Turns out one co-worker of ours in NY in Tower 7 was hit by debris as he was walking into Tower 7 as the plane hit one of the two towers. He died a year later from his injuries. We now have an award in his name that is given to people in our division every year.
I was on the computer, I can't remember what I was doing now. My husband was getting ready for work and listening to the radio. He came into the family room where I was and said, "Something's happening," then switched on the TV. What we immediately saw was the first tower smoking and in flames. We watched in horror as the second plane hit.

I was in a plane toward Texas from Washington state during the attack. The woman sitting next to me told me that due to the terriost attack, we were going to land the Boise, Idaho airport instead of Denver layover and I was confused. She said that she and her husband didn't more details till we got out of the plane. After getting out of the plane, I recieved a message from my brother in my old 900 Talkabout pager saying, "WHERE ARE YOU????! TELL ME NOW!!!" I sent him the message twice telling him I was there. My parents thought the plane I was in had been hijacked toward NYC but my brother found out online that I was at the Boise airport. He finally sent me the message explaining what had happened. I spent the night at the hotel and I rented the car the next day to drive all night to Denver to meet my friend who drove up from Texas.

I was at work that day. Sitting in front of a computer, working on a client project that needed to get done before the end of the day. A supervisor came out and told me that a plane crashed into World Trade Center building (and that's the first one) sometime before 9 am, told me to check out the Web and look at the breaking news. At first, I thought it was an accident done horrible wrong. Only few minutes later, the same supervisor heard on the radio and told me that the second plane trashed into the other WTC building. I was in shock. Soon, everyone at work just stopped and checked out the TV radio one of the press guys brought in at the warehouse. The connection was fuzzy at best. So I had to settle with minute updates of the new attacks in New York. Only moments later, my supervisor told me that another plane hit the Pentagon! I was like "Holy sh*t!". The rest of the day seems so surreal. I left the client job half-completed and my boss understood that this was a more serious day of events, let me go home a bit early. On my way home, I saw so many people lining up at the gas stations. It was panic all over. I was glued to the TV and keep checking the Net for latest info. I went to a nearby gym so I can get some work-out. When I got there, the place was almost empty and all the TVs were showing the same thing, with different network channels. It was a really unbelievably shocking and surreal day, even it was a beautiful, cloudless day. When the second plane hits the second tower and the third plane hits the Pentagon, I knew we're at war right away. I never forget that day.
