It’s one thing to not like someone for its blogging and people are entitled to their opinions but it’s another to think that a blogger is out to “destroy” or “tar” or “hurt” the Deaf community (cue in Deaf Dr. Evil laughter). That sort of thinking, again, hinges in the realm of conspiracy thinking and paranoia. Suspicions can sometime cloud people’s own rationality and judgment. Yet they are free to make their own opinions and judgment just as I am free to do so myself. But all that recent complaining has certainly gotten surreal.
In one of the comments submitted in my blog Shel makes the claim.
In most posts? Shel must’ve been away for too long or don’t even bother to read any of my blogs. I think this here has to do with her having a personal angst with me than about my postings per se. Just guessing here. Not a mind reader. I could be wrong. Perhaps her mind was already made up about me even before she read some of my blogs? Who knows? I've certainly have not made any decisions about Shel's own writings other than she has an opinion and I don't even know her well enough to judge.
“YOU chose to focus on the negative events in this post. In most posts (at least the ones I've read anyway) you often point to the negative. I have not seen you discuss the Deaf community or incidents in a positive light... Must have been offline those times.”
As you can already see I have my own blogging style and I get to choose an issue or topic that interest me. And when I have questions on deaf-related issues I pen them down in my blog and see what readers say. If they want to believe in some conspiratorial plot that I and others are doing, then I certainly cannot help them with their own insanity to even suggest that. Their minds are already made up. Only they can change it, not me.
Now, what do I think about the “Deaf community”? At times I think it’s over-rated and full of it. While in other instances I think the “Deaf community” has its own positive merits for what they are and how the “Deaf community” can be seen as a service to the community at large when it comes to educating the public. But that‘s two-edged sword deal there. There are a lot of camaraderie and friendships but then again there’s a lot of bullshit, too. This is one of them.
At times I see it as one big mess but that’s mostly attributed to their own politicizations and certain narrow-mindedness in their own thinking at times. And sometimes its about being overly-protective, too. But when I give praises or give a positive nod then take that as a rare compliment to take home though not about the “Deaf community.” I have to be impressed first in order to offer positive compliments, enough so that I would write a positive blog piece. I am not thoroughly impressed with the “Deaf community” although there are some positive things that I do see from within but still I‘m not impressed. I am more impressed with individuals and how they set themselves apart from other people which I why I‘ve done lots of interviews of Deaf people (Matt Hamill, Steve Sandy on Dummy Hoy, Greg Gunderson, etc…) or discussed the personal details of Deaf, deaf, and hard of hearing individuals in the positive things they do and their outlook on life. I look for uniqueness in an individual regardless of their hearing loss status or which community they are a part of. I look for unique people that I come across who have taken a challenge in life whether a person is Deaf, deaf, or hard of hearing. I am more impressed on what people think, their philosophies on life, their outlook on life, the challenge they do and so on. I also like humor, intellectual humor that attracts me to other people‘s blogging style or how they express themselves in that manner. I’m a complex person. It takes a lot to impress me but with the right combination of things it might be enough to get me interested. If you’re hurt at this point then you need ask yourself why and re-examine your own thinking.
All this mewling about me “tarring” the Deaf community is erroneous hinged with paranoia. I believe this is reflective of their own inner insecurity over something. If they have strong faith in their own "Deaf community" then there is no need for them to be overly defensive and start accusing people of "tarring" the "Deaf community." But when they do get overly defensive I wonder about their confidence in all this. I’m not sure exactly what but it’s just a feeling.
They try so hard to get me to seek “approval” about the “Deaf community.” And when they cannot then they can only conclude that I’m against it and I have a disdain for it. Not so. Perhaps they have never considered the fact that I’m simply not impressed with the “Deaf community” in the first place? And since I am person who is hard of hearing that moves between the Deaf, deaf, hard of hearing and hearing fences with ease where I have gained various perspectives and experiences, perhaps this is what making some people angry? I don’t know but it is sure is a complex one.
I don’t bite. I do have an opinion. I am a complex person myself. I am not impressed easily. And I don’t go around “tarring” the Deaf community, either. Although that does not prevent me from having an opinion about certain groups or organizations. I have my own interest and even quirky humor that makes me that unique person. Take that to heart with you.
Below is a short sample list of my 300 entries from January 31, 2008 to September 16, 2010 even though I began blogging in 2004 of which a total of 1568 entries were entered so far. In this year’s entry I’ve penned 160 entries in 242 days. From reading my blog titles you can get the general idea what my topics were. And if an entry topic looks interesting use my Kokonut Pundit search bar located on the left side of my blog and enter the full blog title to get the link and read the contents. Whether it’s “positive” or “negative” is purely an opinion of yours based on your perception from where you sit. I just write what I feel and the topics that interest me. And I don’t need to explain this again, either. The fact is that there are people who don't like my blogs and there are people who do like my blogs. End of story. You can do all the conspiratorial thinking you want if that makes you happy. Just keep the whining to yourself. What now? You're going to complain about my blog title, too?
NOTE: I removed one name, Barb Digi, since it wasn't the correct name I put down as I was thinking of another one I couldn't remember at the time. That's a faux pas on my end. Sorry.

I agree - he is protesting too much which essentially means he is guilty as accused.
It is very unfortunate that few people have resorted to ad hominem attacks to criticize you personally. While I am not entirely comfortable with how you frame issues and how you respond, I defend your freedom to express your thoughts no matter how much uncomfortable they can make me.
I do see a bit of Socrates in you. Socrates was famous for questioning everything that really annoyed some people during his time. They became most fed up with him that they decided to punish him to death for corrupting the minds of the young people. We don't need to repeat history by banishing, excommunicating or even scolding a member of the deaf community for asking questions. If Socrates were alive today, he would embrace your question on whether there are risks with ASL, for example. He could dive deep into what you mean by risk and what you mean by ASL and how you decide if an effect is a risk or not and so on. It should not be a crime to ask tough questions.

Public domain notice: I put all of my expressions in this post in the public domain.
Interesting that you dragged my name in your post framing me under YOUR impression that I have concluded it is your goal to tar the Deaf Community. How about asking me what I think of you for a change instead of jumping to conclusions?
I thought it was amusing how you presented yourself as a Deaf Dr. Evil giving off some laughter and smirking in the v/blogosphere so congratulations for following the humorous footsteps. Keep it up! We don't need more misery here.
However, it would be nice if you are able focus on the positive changes made by the Deaf community for a change as well. The Deaf community in America varies as we cannot view the b/vlogosphere or one organization as a whole. Focusing on negativity only is like cherry picking, ya know.
I am sorry that you are viewing the Deaf community with a glass that is half empty but I do hope someday that you can make a difference to make it half full but I am sure you already have that was unknown to me.
Naturally, we all have negative and positive outcomes like any other communities but we continue to strive everyday to make it better as I am sure you are rationale to agree with this goal.
Conspiracy? ROFL! Like you have the power? Hilarious!
It's good to review your past posts, in fact, you should. Look at them not from your own viewpoint, but how other people with more positive outlooks would view them. It's very educational, promise.
You've been discouraging, among other words. Even if you post positive pieces about outstanding Deaf people, those are few.
For an example of a positive writing approach, look at Josh Swiller's piece this week. Although his bias is very clear as that of a formerly hard of hearing, now CI-wearing person who believes that the CI and future technology will cause the extinction of the Deaf community, the love also shows as clearly. He deeply admires the Gallaudet community and his student, warts and all. His writing is inspirational and invites one into his space.
To be provocative and controversial, fine. That may have its place in the world of blogging if you want to be that. Just remember the company that you keep there.
Dianrez posted a blog entry about how "Deaf Hate Crime" would "taint the Deaf community."
"But let's leave "hate crime" and that kind of talk out of it."
"It closes doors that need not be closed. It hurts our credibility when we talk about our struggles for equality and fairness."
http://dianrez.xanga.com/726921068/hate-crime-verbiage-can-harm-us/
Kokonut Pundit ASKED a question: "Do the events of the past several months taint the Deaf community?"
Dianez STATED "Deaf Hate Crime" would "taint the Deaf community."
Is Dianrez being hypocritical?
The article Dianrez's referring to is http://www.washingtonian.com/articles/people/16737.html
Your blog doesn't upset me as a Deaf person. I'm just puzzled by your unhealthy obsession with a community that you aren't even a part of, and whose members you rarely see in person.
Don't you think life's too short for that? (And yes, I'd say the same to the handful of Deaf people angry with your blog.)
It'd be odd for me to write blogs that are relentlessly negative about a group that has almost nothing in common with me- say, Puerto Ricans. If I were to do that, I'd have to expect (and accept) that a number of Ricans would be upset, instead of whining endlessly about their reactions to my blog. Think about it.
Mike Connell...whining about whining since 2004. ;)
Barb. I removed your name. I was thinking of somebody else at the time. I've made the error note in my blog.
Interesting difference, Anony @6:21 pm.
Mike asks a question, whereas Dianrez states what is her opinion.
Think the deaf community could use more of the questions rather than opinions.
Questions are what make diversity in a community possible. Questions bring about different answers, different hypotheses... omg, a discussion.
Opinions are just that--take it or leave it. :\
Ann_C
Dianrez, Josh Swiller is Josh Swiller. I am not him. Please do not try and tell me what I should or should not write in a blog. I don't go over to other people blogs and say you should not do this or that because I don't like what you write. I recognize each person's own creativity when it comes to blogging. I certainly don't tell bloggers on what they should write out of habit.
Again, I have noticed several erroroneous assumptions by people who were bent on making this a bit more personal, and thus ad hominems. That that I can't say this isn't expect. It's been the norm when people sensibilities are, for some reason or another, were challeneged.
Am I seeing that people are suddenly worried that I would somehow "taint the Deaf community" by asking questions related to "tainting the Deaf community"? Rather fascinating that people would even think that.
Dianrez, you were one of them in raising the accusations that I was out to "tar" the Deaf community. Yet I raised the questions on whether the recent events helped marred the image of the Deaf community. And your big deal is what now?
The company I keep? I keep fine with who I associate myself with. Why are you so worried? Should I also part wisdom your way, too?
JPR,
Yes, it is in my nature to ask these things, sometimes tough questions. I don't make it personal here which is what people are suggesting. Which in turn, and ironically, they make it upon themselves to make it personal themselves by going after me. Which is strange. Sounds like some don't have a lot of faith in their own Deaf community. If they do, then why be so concerned in what I write? But what I write isn't about the Deaf community as a whole as I've explained before.
Thanks for responding.
Bob,
What a strange comment. I am not a part of the Deaf community? Sure I am. It's who I associate myself with. My wife is Deaf. She and I have Deaf friends. We use our VP, our FB, emails, IM, and even on our UbiVia. And when then enjoy the company of our friends in person as well. I am also a part of the hearing community and deaf/hh communities with other people I associate myself with. Nothing in common? Might want to rethink that.
Perhaps they are angry because they are reading way too much into what I write? Or perhaps this has to do with their insecurity about themselves and their community? I don't know, Ben. This what happens when there are controversal subjects being discussed.
Each of us has a different perspective, our comfort zones, how we communicate, our experiences in life and so on.
Mike !!!

Mike,
I personally feel asking questions is a good thing. I'll stand by your first amendment rights to do so. I haven't seen you write anything that wouldn't be allowed on a televised news debate.
(I'm not saying I agree with everything you've said. Having differing opinions is a healthy, normal thing- I think you'd agree. How boring it would be if we all had exactly the same opinions!)
And no, I don't think you're out to destroy the deaf community. Haven't seen anyone deaf or hard of hearing who tries to do that.
it would be SO refreshing if, just for the heck of it, commentors would respond to Mike's ideas, thoughts, and questions - instead of getting personal and questioning his motives. When commentors attack him personally, all it proves is that they don't have a persuasive argument or facts to show in return. You can't have a sensible discussion with a fool. I've been a fan of Mike's b/vlogs from the beginning and can tell you he writes of everything under the sun. I appreciate his wide-ranging interests and have learned a lot from him. If anyone feels provoked or huffy about something he says, all you have to do is look within for insights. A little bit of critical inquiry won't hurt anyone.
anony 10:28 PM - thank you. Yes! Insight. That's a good one.
JPL,
You're one of sane ones out there recognizing what I'm writing.

How hard can that be?
Hi,
I read the blog yesterday, but I was busy with my parents so I was unable to leave any comments.
I have to admit that I was a little perplexed to see Barb's name in your blog, since to my best recollection, she did not do anything to you negatively; instead she respected your opinions, as I recall. Plus, I have a personal bias; I know Barb on a personal level and she's a moderate just like us (believe it or not) and yet she's a heart for Deaf Culture, doing a wonderful job with teaching, etc. So I appreciate to see you removing her name.
When we disagree, we have to do it with respect. It's hard to do that when we disagree a bit strongly.
As for me, I don't always agree with you (i.e. politics... but that's OK, we mostly know how to agree to disagree on politics without resorting to tarring and feathering ~wink~
I like to read different perspectives on any subjects, like Deaf Culture, to get a bigger picture, without focusing on the details.
One thing about your blogging, like Joseph said, you challenge us to think... It's OK to see different perspectives arise, since we could understand ourselves better and realize that emotions play a large role in it. You bring logic to your blogging, which is something I like. You bring a dry sense of humor.
Lastly, commenters, I am NOT snickering... I am just stating my perspective, nothing more ~wink~
Candy is right... our responses are usually emotional... like Mike's last blog, about the Paotie complex response, just explained.
So, good blog, Mike. Now getting ready for going to spend a day at a farm with my family and my parents... gonna be a gorgeous day!
Karen,
Yes, and I was using the wrong name. I thought for some reason that was the right name of a person I was thinking of. A rare moment of slip up. Barb is fine. I already made an additional comment in my blog about that slip up. Unfortunate.
Thanks Mike for acknowledging that and to you who stood up for me. Like Karen, I am gonna go out and enjoy the beautiful weather at an 11th annual steer roast event held by Rochester Recreation Club for the Deaf. There are fun activities like horseshoe, euchre, scat & poker, bocce and more including yummy lunch and dinner!
Too bad you are too far away to enjoy this positive Deaf community event, Mike! Perhaps someday!
Ben,There are Puerto Ricans who prefer English over Spanish. They are no less part of the Puerto Rican community. Deaf need to understand they are part of a larger community of deaf and hard or hearing people who happily use both English and/or ASL, and are able to see Deaf with an unbiased eye. The Deaf community doesn't dictate who is in or out.
Some people, when they get upset, place the blame on the person or situation that made them upset. "it's your fault I'm mad. You must be a bad person for making me mad." Feelings come from within, not from outside. in other words, anger, fear, disgust, and other unpleasant emotions are a response to a stimulus, nothing more. Many people have some cherished values, beliefs, worldview, etc. When confronted with perspectives opposite their own, it's only human nature to feel disturbed. people who have intense attachments to their particular values feel theirs is the *only* right way, and anyone who doesn't believe as they do must be wrong or even evil (wink).
it's not easy to let go of the need to be right and focus on the questions and issues. one thing that helps me is to talk about what I think, believe, and see. also, since Mike's blogs often take more than one reading to digest, and even more time to process my thoughts. so don't react right away. think about it a little first. you'll be amazed what comes up in your minds.

There are three kinds of people in this ever-so-complex world.
1) People who are so afraid of complications, negativity or challenges. It upsets them. They live in la la land, a fantasy island of some sort.
2) People who are not afraid of complications, negativity or challenges. They live by reality checks and love the challenge of detecting weakness and flaws with hope to find ways to make this world a better place to live. This group of people are frequently seen as traitors by the first group.
3) People who either don't care or find it entertaining.
Mike, you can't please everybody. In short, you're doing fine.
Yup. The world is a fun place to live in. Like Barry said, we can't please everyone... and that's what makes it exciting.
~grinning~
But oh of course... with respect.
~shrug~
I think perhaps you worry too much about not being part of some mythical deaf community Mike, try asking WHERE it is first. I gave up the ID concerns years ago, believe me things are a lot clearer when you do ! Online is NOT the deaf community, online is where those who love to debate deaf issues reside mostly,or simply those who love arguing for its own sake. Be true to yourself nothing else matters. If you are doomed like some of us to reside on the outer limits of what is perceived the deaf thing, it's not a big deal. That isn't all that exists. No-one at deaf.read has the power or authority to speak for deaf people or to define them, it is just strong individuals putting their ten cents worth mostly, nothing worse for that but, let's not worry too much if we upset a few of them, at grass root level is what really counts, not here. I've a lot of respect for many who post here, however they aren't the community, no-one knows what that is it has never been defined.
Mike you are doing ok. But the only person in this world that should be tarred and feathered is RICKY TAYLOR aka RIDOR.
He's the one who has made our deaf blog world so negitive. He's one that has attacked everyone around him because of his POWER ego. And now that he's out of jail again, he's once more on an EGO tripping with negitive views on police and stuff. SO LET'S tar and feather Ricky!
Mike, I believe you said you identify yourself as HoH and had no interest in associating with the Deaf community. If my memory was faulty, my profoundest apologies then!
My point remains. If you write blogs about a group that is 95%+ negative, you HAVE to expect some negativity in return. Furthermore, read the comments in youtube and newspaper articles- civility, unfortunately, doesn't prevail in the larger internet either.
I think you might've complained some time ago about Deaf people's negativity regarding oralism, saying that they should be simply pro-ASL, be positive, etc. What about YOU? Why not simply be "pro-choice" (regarding communication philosophy), without putting people down?
Anyway, to answer your question whether the deaf community's image was tarnished - actually the hearing world hardly pays attention to our community. We're insignificant, for the better or the worse. Our population pales in comparison to those of black, hispanic, Asian, etc.
Furthermore, the hearing world is full of unpleasant deeds of its own- lies, robberies, assaults, fraud, scandals, wars, terrorism, genocides, fratricides, uxoricides, what have you.
Deaf people aren't angels either? Wow, news flash!
